Alternative Neck Cancer Treatment Options

Neck cancer, which includes cancers of the throat, tonsils, and tongue, is associated with lifestyle factors.  The most common risk factors of neck cancer include:

  • tobacco use
  • excessive alcohol use
  • a poor diet
  • oral HPV infection

Sometimes chronic negative emotions and emotional trauma also contribute to the development of neck, tonsils, tongue and throat cancers.

  Symptoms of neck cancer include:

  • voice changes
  • sore throat
  • lumps or sores that do not heal
  • difficulty swallowing
  • cough
  • red or white patches
  • loose teeth
  • difficulty breathing
  • earache

Another factor that contributes to a higher risk of cancer is psychological and emotional stress.  Stress has been shown to contribute to the likelihood of using cigarettes and alcohol to cope, which will in turn directly contribute to a chance of getting neck cancer.  In addition, some studies have indicated a link between stress and an increased risk of breast cancer for women.  Stress creates a common risk factor between different types of cancer, making it even more important to combat stress as a part of ones life.

Patients with neck cancer face challenging decisions when it comes to treatment options.  Conventional cancer treatments often involve procedures which are invasive, painful, and an interference to their lives.  While it is not disputed that these treatments are powerful, the side effects may cause further problems for the patients.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are two conventional neck cancer treatments that work to kill cancer cells.  While these procedures are not as physically invasive as surgical options, long lasting effects can occur.  Voice changes, eating difficulties, and thyroid problems are among some of the side effects caused by radiation therapy.  Chemotherapy can cause issues outside of the neck area, including hair loss, problems with the digestive system, fatigue, and more.  Any of these side effects would require lifestyle changes, and can potentially affect ones work and social lives.

Surgical treatments involve cutting out part or all of the area containing the tumor.  Surgery can change your ability to swallow, eat, and talk.  In addition, you may require a new airway through an opening in your neck, called a stoma.  As with most surgeries, a risk of bleeding and infection is also present.

While these conventional neck cancer treatment options may be powerful in removal of cancer, they are costly, time-consuming, and risky.  Safer and effective options for neck cancer treatment exist outside of the realm of conventional medicine.  These alternative neck cancer treatment options may also be used in combination with conventional neck cancer treatments.  Many neck cancer treatment alternatives exist, including nutritional therapies, vitamin and supplement therapies, and others.  Hyperthermia is a neck cancer treatment option which involves exposing body tissues to high temperatures.  These temperatures can kill cancer cells and cause minimal damage to other tissues.  This neck cancer treatment is most often used in combination with radiation therapy, as it also serves to make cancer cells more sensitive to the radiation.  This neck cancer treatment is effective, has little or no side effects, and requires no recovery time.
