Please Join Me In Urging Our Elected Leaders To Put And End To Nuclear Power in the United States

What’s most remarkable about this election result is that Merkel’s other policies have resulted in a surging German economy coupled with falling unemployment, unlike the economic situation we face here in the United States.

In other words, the majority of German voters were willing to potentially risk a reversal of Germany’s successful economic policies because they realize how important it is that their nation do everything in its power to safeguard themselves from the threat of a nuclear disaster like the one now being endured by the Japanese.

We the people of the United States must come to the same realization. Not only to prevent another incident such as what occurred at Three Mile Island, but also to turn the tide away from the cancer-causing radiation that everyone living within 100 miles of nuclear power reactors are exposed to. But we cannot accomplish this by ourselves. In order for it to happen, we must do all we can to demand that our elected leaders, including the President, turn away from the lure of campaign funds and influence peddling on the part of the nuclear power industry.

Let’s face it. Our so-called public servants in Washington DC are for the most part anything but! If they truly cared about us, our great nation would not be in the mess it’s in. Nor would political lobbyists, including those representing the nuclear power industry, have the corrupting influence they have. Although there are exceptions, by and large our representatives in the House and Senate are led primarily by money. But there is one thing that they care for more than campaign funds and the many perks that go along with them, and that’s getting re-elected.

That’s our ace in the hole and it’s a power that you shouldn’t underestimate.

I’m speaking from firsthand experience. In the early 1990s, as I was in the midst of completing the first edition of Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, Congress was on the verge of giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate herbs and nutritional supplements the same way that they currently regulate pharmaceutical drugs. Had that action occurred, many of the vitamins and other supplements that remain widely available today in the US would have disappeared because supplement companies would have been required to spend the same type of money (hundreds of millions of dollars be supplement) that pharmaceutical companies spend to bring their drugs to market before their nutritional products could be sold..

Drug companies can afford to spend that type of money because, when their drugs receive FDA approval, they are also awarded a seven-year window in which they are the only company that can sell their patented drug product. This usually equates to tens of billions of dollars in profits from sales of that drug, and sometimes even more. Supplement companies would not have been able to compete in such an environment for the simple reason that the vast majority of supplements are not patentable. Big Pharma knew this, and was in fact counting on it, which is why their lobbyists went on a spending spree, doing all they could to encourage the House and Senate to pass legislation that would have destroyed the supplement industry as we know it.

In addition to Big Pharma’s spending spree at that time, both the FDA and select politicians did everything they could to conduct a smear campaign against “the dangers of unregulated supplements,” repeatedly stating that they could kill and maim, etc. (The truth is that, unlike FDA-approved drugs, which kill over 100,000 people and cause another 2 million more to be hospitalized each and every year when they are prescribed and taken according to proper safety guidelines, the safety record of vitamins and minerals when properly used reveals no such deaths or hospitalizations.) As a result, it seemed certain that the FDA would soon be granted the power it and Big Pharma wanted it to have over the supplement industry.

And then something wonderful happened. All across the country, people like you began signing petitions and writing their elected officials with essentially the same message: “Keep you hands off our vitamins!” I did all I could at the time to help get this message out, as did all of the leading physicians and health organizations that contributed to the wealth of knowledge you can find in my Guide.

And so it was that in the 11th hour, the tide suddenly turned, and instead of granting the FDA the power it craved, Congress enacted legislation that did just the opposite, Known as DSHEA, this act was signed into law by President Clinton in 1994, and because of it your freedom to choose and use nutritional supplements in the US remains stronger than in any other Western nation.

The will of a dedicated minority of US citizens proved that the Voice of the People is still more powerful than all the lobbyist money rained down upon Congress each and every day.

Now the time has come for we the American people to unite once more, so that our elected leaders know how serious we are about putting an end to the threat nuclear power poses to our health and the health of many future generations of Americans to come.
