A new theory attributes cyclist Lance Armstrong's astounding victory over testicular cancer to plain old body heat, reports the Associated Press (click the post title to read the article). The 5-year survival rate from testicular cancer is more than 95%, even when it has spread to nearby lymph nodes, and 72% when it has spread to other body parts.

In an article just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Johns Hopkins University researchers say that because the temperature of the testicles is a few degrees cooler than in the rest of the body (to enhance sperm development), cancer developing there may be more sensitive to heat. They postulate that when testicular cancer spreads to warmer parts of the body, the high temperatures may damage the cells making them more vulnerable to treatment. The researchers hope that what they dub "the Lance Armstrong effect" can be used to make other cancers more treatable.
