New Skin Patch Relieves Depression

The first-ever skin patch to relieve symptoms of depression has been approved for sale by the FDA. Despite some concerns about side effects, the patch offers unrivaled convenience, reports James Keough on alternativemedicine.com (click the post title to read the article).

Named Emsam, the newly approved once-a-day patch contains selegiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) also used to treat Parkinson's disease. Like all MAOIs, Emsam requires a slew of dietary restrictions to avoid ingesting tyramine which can react with the drug and cause sudden spikes in blood pressure that can lead to stroke and death. Aged cheese, nuts, draft beer, and wine are among the foods to be avoided.
