Boost Immune System to Fight Cancer

Researchers at Ohio State University think that boosting the immune system of breast-cancer patients will increase the effectiveness of Herceptin, a powerful anti-cancer drug. Results of their tests on mice were recently published in the Journal of Immunology. Human trials are expected to begin in 6 months, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch.

In laboratory tests, interleukin-21, a naturally produced antibody, boosted the effectiveness of Herceptin. In effect, scientists are using the immune system, which was designed to fight infection, to fight cancer by using antibodies to attack tumors. Dr. Marisa Weiss, a Philadelphia oncologist and founder of breastcancer.org called the OSU results "promising" but cautioned that successful experiments with mice don't always equate to success in humans.
