Dental Health and Cancer

We know that you have also run into this situation, many mainstream dentists are now no longer offering amalgam fillings in their practice. In fact even though insurance only pays for amalgam fillings in most cases, some dental practices no longer offer them as an option leaving your only option for a filling to be a composite filling.

When questioned further on this practice, our own family dentist said that even though the American Dental Association has not come out publicly to discourage amalgam fillings, his office has decided based on long-term health issues and the fact that a smaller surface area is affected when a composite filling is used that he and his practice will only provide composite fillings for patients.

If you don't know, amalgam fillings are the silver ones and contain a small amount of mercury as well as nickel. The composite fillings are the white ones which are, when installed are putty-like in consistency, and are then dried rock-hard with a special light that is held over your mouth.

The article that we have linked into our title gives a brief overview of our feelings that the mercury in the amalgam fillings have been know to be a factor in chronic health problems. Complementary Medicine?

Sometime alternative medicine is misunderstood by the traditional medical community. In several cases it appeared that the physicians were singled out and had their ability to practice medicine called into play. In all sectors both conventional and alternative there can be disreputable practitioners, but to smear the entire alternative community as such is simply wrong. Here is an excerpt from our expose.

Emmanuel Revici and Michael Schachter; and famed Lyme disease doctors Joseph Burrascano and Charles Gant."...

"...Not all alternative therapies are antagonistic to conventional medicine: They often complement each other and, when used in tandem, are what is termed "complementary" medicine. Neither is every physician who calls him- or herself alternative competent or even ethical, any more or less than conventional doctors. But patients have a right to decide what kinds of therapies they receive, with requirements of informed consent built in as safeguards."

Lung Cancer in the News

Did you know that more Americans die each year from lung cancer than breast cancer, colon cancer or prostate cancer? 87% of all lung cancer is tobacco-use related, but not all users of tobacco products will get lung cancer, and that still leaves 13% of lung cancer patients that have not used tobacco products and have still gotten this disease. Cervical Cancer, a Growing Interest

We see that there is growing interest on the Web right now in information about Cervical Cancer. This particular cancer is growing and now more prevalent than ever in today's population.

A leading risk factor of Cervical Cancer is the sexual transmission of the human papilloma virus (HPV). This cancer if found early through a routine pap smear done in a yearly physical exam by a gynecologist has a high cure rate. Once discovered, there are several treatment and some can even be performed quickly and in a physician's office. If not treated promptly this cancer can become serious and invasive.

Hyperthermia Cancer Treatments

Have you heard of this? This integrative medical treatment combines the delivery of conventional chemotherapy medications in an innovative and alternative way.

With hyperthermia, the patient's full body, and sometimes only isolated body part, is heated to 106° F. This is done in a hospital setting and the patient is very closely monitored throughout. The chemotherapy medication is then delivered intravenously. Hyperthermia enhances the effect of the chemotherapy as the blood vessels in the heated section of the body or in the patient if using full body hyperthermia, will dilate for improved flow of the medication.

Alternative Cancer Treatment Going Conventional?

Today in the Washington Post it was announced that the National Institute of Health was launching a Cancer Genome Project. If you click our post title, you will be able to read the whole article from the Washington Post it is interesting reading.

We have been blogging in the last several days about the use of specialized chemotherapies that target specific cancer types that are being used with great success right now in Germany and we were greatly interested in seeing that the National Institute of Health is embracing the research technology behind some of these advances. It appears that this alternative cancer treatment is going mainstream! In fact we blogged on Monday about BioFocus and their work on categorizing the cancer genome into a database in Europe. Exciting research is going on with BioFocus and several leading cancer clinics in Germany and Europe are already using these innovative treatment.

Cancer's Road Map to Metastasis Revealed

How cancer specifically and actually metastasizes has been a medical mystery. This article picked up by Reuters in London reveals that scientists have found that cancer spreads from a primary site by sending an envoy out through normal bone marrow cells to prepare a new site for growth. This breakthrough information will be highly useful in modern and alternative therapies to stop the envoys from being sent to prevent the spread of cancer.

Here is an important excerpt from the article:

"...The authors show that tumor cells can mobiles normal bone marrow cells, causing them to migrate to particular regions and change the local environment so as to attract and support a developing metastasis," Patricia Steeg, of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, said in a commentary.

"Cells at the site of the metastasis multiply and produce a protein called fibronectin, which acts like a glue to attract and trap the bone marrow cells to create a landing pad or nest for the cancer cells.

"These nests provide attachment factors for the tumor cells to implant and nurture them. It causes them not only to bind but to proliferate. Once that all takes place we have a fully formed metastatic site or secondary tumor," said Lyden.

"This is the first time anyone has discovered what we call the pre-metastatic niche."

"Without the landing pad, the cancerous cell could not colonize the organ."
