Herbal Remedies for Children

The above article discusses the benefits (and increasingly commonplace practice) of herbal remedies for children. Herbs such as echinacea, are being used in combination with more common remedies to treat colds and other illnesses. The article states:

"It's sort of back to the future... Two hundred years ago, we
used only herbs and supplements, then along came prescription medications,
and we stopped using as many home remedies. And now that we are more
aware that not all drugs are miracle drugs, and many drugs have side effects,
we're back to using more home remedies."

Some of the more interesting ideas in the article include using garlic to treat cold and flu symptoms and using oatmeal and chamomile to calm. It is important to talk with a qualified professional regarding the proper dosage and dispensing of herbal remedies, especially for children.

Low Folate and Vitamin B12 Linked to Depression

It has been asserted that the any deficiency in vitamin B12 and/ or folate may put indivduals, especially women, at a heightened risk for depression. The article states that:

"Folate deficiency has been linked in clinic studies to depression, persistent depressive symptoms, and poor response to antidepressants. One study found that people with major depression had folate levels lower than people who had never been depressed. "

"What causes a deficiency of vitamins B12 and folate? The most common are aging and poor diet. Vitamin B12 deficiency is an issue for many older adults, with multiple factors such as poor diet, atrophic gastritis, reduced intestinal absorption, and drug interactions contributing to the problem. Some experts suggest a daily multivitamin to maintain adequate B12 levels." To help battle this issue, individuals should take care to eat their vegetables and take a multivitamin regularly.

This article discusses a drug addiction treatment facility that is using the principles of alternative medicine to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts. Some new facilities rehabilitate patients with drug addiction, depression and sleep disorders using innovative combinations.

"In lieu of conventional medical treatments, the addiction-recovery programs... focus on nutrition and customized supplements such as vitamins, amino acids and herbs, [says the owner]. Twelve-step meetings are offered, but alongside treatments such as acupuncture, message therapy, meditation and equine-assisted therapy."

Understanding the link between alternative medicine and the treatment of these types of disorders is very important. Treat ADD With Alternative Medicine

This article discusses the many alternative therapies used in treating children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This article reaches beyond the idea of simply giving children drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. The author of this article, Sarah Jenkins, discusses nutritional restructuring and dietary supplements as possible alternatives to medication. Jenkins notes "specifically, the use of glyconutritional supplements, megadose vitamins, amino acid supplementation, Gingko biloba, or any number of other herbal remedies" to be used in the treatment of ADD, but cautions that herbal remedies should be used with caution as they are not regulated by the FDA.

Jenkins discusses several other, albeit uncommon, treatments that are not widely used. She states: One "specific realm of treatment which has gotten little respect is that of motion sickness medication, treatment for candida yeast, and optometric visual training. These each fault inconspicuous culprits for ADD, such as inner ear problems (motion sickness medication), toxins produced by excessive yeast in the body (candida), or faulty eye movements and eye sensitivity (optometric visual training)." It is obvious that there are many treatments out there that can, and do, effectively treat ADD/ADHD without the use of stimulants or other medications.

In my book, The Enzyme Cure, I discuss ways in which enzyme therapy can be effectively used to treat childhood health problems, including ADD/ADHD. It can be found at http://www.burtongoldberg.com/books.html.
