Brain chemistry may be the reason some people with a strong family history of alcoholism become alcoholics while others do not, according to new research. A team of scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY have discovered that elevated levels of brain cell receptors called dopamine D2 may protect those at greatest risk of developing alcoholism. Dopamine D2 is a chemical messenger that stimulates the brain's reward circuits. Increasing the level of dopamine D2 may protect people from developing alcoholism. In the study, researchers compared the number of D2 receptors in nonalcoholics with no family history of alcoholism to those with a family history of alcoholism. High risk individuals rather than those already afflicted with the disease were studied because chronic alcohol abuse reduces the number of dopamine receptors, making comparison difficult. Receptor levels were 10% higher in participants with a family history of alcoholism. Children of 40- to 49-year old dads are nearly six times more likely to have autism than children of men under 30, and 1 1/2 times more likely to exhibit the mental disorder than children fathered by men ages 30 to 39, regardless of the mother's age.

Researchers studied the medical records of 300,000 17-year-olds collected by Israeli draft boards in the 1980s. Life expectancy in the U.S. has increased nearly 7 years since 1960 to 76.8 years in 2000. That was the starting point for a study by David Cutler, a professor of applied economics at Harvard University, and Dr. Sandeep Vijan of the University of Michigan Health System. "After adjusting for nonmedical factors in longevity such as reduced smoking rates and declines in the homicide rate, the researchers estimated that 50% of the increase in life expectancy can be attributed to medical care," Bowman reports. "Plotting those added years against the rates of health spending during the same period, the researchers found that each extra year of life has cost about $19,900," writes Bowman. As defined by insurance companies, a year of life is valued at $50,000 to $200,000.

The trade-off has not been that favorable for those over 65, the study found. Longevity for older Americans has increased only 3.5 years since 1980 at a cost per year of $121,000 (1980-1990) to $145,000 (1990-2000), well beyond the means of most Americans. However, the researchers believe the increased medical costs have resulted in a better quality of life for the elderly.

A new breast exam technique being pioneered at Ohio State University can detect breast cancer earlier that other exam methods now in use. Using a vertical pattern and covering a larger area, proponent Dr. Doug Knutson hopes the new technique will become the medical standard, replacing the less reliable circular and horizontal patterns favored today.

Since 2004, Dr. Knutson, OSU assistant professor of family medicine, has taught the technique to 100 central Ohio physicians and 400 OSU medical students, but it remains largely unknown outside the OSU community. The study of 49 patients published in Clinical Infection Diseases, found that while most people infected with the virus have no symptoms, 20% develop flu-like West Nile fever, and 1% develop more serious diseases, which can include meningitis and encephalitis. Nothing says summer in America like hot dogs on the grill, but they could be killing you. If you enjoy eating lots of hot dogs, sausages, deli meats, and other processed meats, you could face a significantly higher risk of pancreatic cancer, according to a study by the Cancer Research Center at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

People who daily eat 40 grams or more of these meats are 67% more likely to develop cancer of the pancreas. Even worse, if your diet is rich in pork ("the other white meat") and red meat, your risk of pancreatic cancer increases by 50%, the study found. No link to pancreatic cancer risk was found from consumption of poultry, fish, dairy products or eggs. The 7-year study involved 190,545 men and women of African-American, Japanese-American, Caucasian, Latino and Native Hawaiian descent, 482 of whom developed pancreatic cancer.

Study leader Dr. Ute Nothlings believes the cancer link comes from chemical reactions during production and processing rather than from inherent fat or cholesterol. If fat or cholesterol were the carcinogenic culprits, Dr. Nothlings said dairy products, which are also high in fat and cholesterol, would show a similar risk of pancreatic cancer, but they do not.

"Our study is the largest of its kind to demonstrate a link between high consumption of processed meats over long periods of time and pancreatic cancer," Nothlings said in a news release carried by Reuters. "The sample size allowed us to obtain statistically significant risk estimates that support this hypothesis." Dr. Nothlings said the next research step is examination of cooking methods. Study results were reported at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Anaheim, California.

The findings were disputed by the American Meat Institute which cited a different study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that reached the opposite conclusion. (Such dichotomies are a common phenomenon in scientific studies.) The trade group, which of course has a professional bias to protect, claimed in its statement, "the larger body of evidence has shown that processed meats are a healthy part of a balanced diet." Uterine cancer patients have an increased risk of contracting colon, ovarian and gastric cancers says a study just published by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. A study of 543 women showed that about one in 50 women with uterine cancer have a mutation, called Lynch syndrome, that links the cancers.

Because uterine cancer carries a fairly decent prognosis, women with Lynch syndrome "are probably going to go on to survive their endometrial cancer and sadly go on to get colon cancer," said Heather Hampel, a genetic counselor at OSU and lead author of the study.

The most widespread industrial contaminant in drinking water can cause cancer in people, the National Academy of Sciences reported this week (click the post title to read the Associated Press article). Trichloroethylene is a solvent used in adhesives, paint and spot removers and is widely used to remove grease from metal parts in airplanes and to clean fuel lines at missile sites. The easily evaporated, colorless liquid is one of the most common pollutants found in the air, soil, and water at U.S. military bases.

The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the NAS report and could rule for stricter regulations. Currently the EPA requires limiting tricholoroethylene to no more than 5 parts per billion of drinking water. Stricter regulations could force the government to require more thorough clean-ups at military and other sites. But that pronouncement was dropped after other federal agencies accused the EPA of inflating the risks." Now, barely 5 years later, the NAS report states, "The committee found that the evidence on carcinogenic risk and other health hazards from exposure to tricholoroethylene has strengthened since 2001. Hundreds of waste sites are contaminated with tricholoroethylene and it is well documented that individuals in many communities are exposed to the chemical, with associated health risks." In the last 5 years, instead of working to decrease this serious health risk that now infects everyone's drinking water, the EPA has sat on its hands while the risk has escalated to alarming proportions.
