A highly respected alternative medicine forum, the Townsend Newsletter provides an authoritative review of scientific information on a wide variety of alternative and integrative medicine topics. In his article, The Cutting Edge of Alternative Medicine and Cancer Treatment: The Video Every Alternative Practitioner Should See, Dr. Collin lauds Burton Goldberg's information- dense documentary as a "must view" for physicians, cancer workers, and cancer patients.

"This video interviews 15 physicians and cancer workers who are truly at the cutting edge of alternative cancer treatment. Through these interviews, Burton Goldberg presents an in-depth portrait of individuals who are combining the best of conventional and alternative complementary therapies," writes Dr. Collin. (Click the post title to read Dr. Collin's entire article.)

Dr. Goldberg advocates a multimodal approach to treating cancer, combining the most successful alternative therapies with conventional treatments to attack cancer on multiple fronts. Many German clinics have long practiced revolutionary treatment approaches that are only now beginning to be offered in the United States. In Cancer Conquest, Dr. Goldberg interviews many of the master practitioners of these treatments and provides contact information for the featured doctors and clinics.

"Cancer Conquest is perhaps the best 2-hour education any practitioner or consumer can acquire on the state of alternative cancer treatment in 2006," writes Dr. Collin.

To watch a free 3-minute preview of Burton Goldberg's exceptional video, Cancer Conquest, visit Dr. Goldberg's website today.

Boost Immune System to Fight Cancer

Researchers at Ohio State University think that boosting the immune system of breast-cancer patients will increase the effectiveness of Herceptin, a powerful anti-cancer drug. Results of their tests on mice were recently published in the Journal of Immunology. Human trials are expected to begin in 6 months, according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch.

In laboratory tests, interleukin-21, a naturally produced antibody, boosted the effectiveness of Herceptin. In effect, scientists are using the immune system, which was designed to fight infection, to fight cancer by using antibodies to attack tumors. Dr. Marisa Weiss, a Philadelphia oncologist and founder of breastcancer.org called the OSU results "promising" but cautioned that successful experiments with mice don't always equate to success in humans.

For years alternative medicine authority Dr. Burton Goldberg has been extolling the benefits of boosting the immune system to fight cancer. In his book An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer, Dr. Goldberg says:

"The human immune system itself, naturally charged with the defense of the body against all foreign, harmful substances, may be enlisted as a therapeutic agent against cancer. Using the principle of vaccines but with nontoxic substances, innovative physicians can provoke stronger than usual immune responses which in turn can help reverse the cancer process."

A recognized expert in alternative medicine, Dr. Goldberg advocates a multimodal approach to fighting cancer, combining the most effective alternative therapies with conventional treatments to combat cancer on multiple fronts. A strong immune system can stop cancer in its tracks and counteract the weakening effects of radiology, chemotherapy, and surgery. In his ground-breaking documentary video Cancer Conquest, Dr. Goldberg thoroughly explores the causes of cancer and the newest alternative and conventional treatments through interviews with experts across the country (click the link for a free preview). In both his book and his video, Dr. Goldberg explores many specific treatments that stimulate the immune system and reverse cancer. A team of scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY have discovered that elevated levels of brain cell receptors called dopamine D2 may protect those at greatest risk of developing alcoholism. Dopamine D2 is a chemical messenger that stimulates the brain's reward circuits. Increasing the level of dopamine D2 may protect people from developing alcoholism. (Click the post title to read the article posted on scenta.)

In the study, researchers compared the number of D2 receptors in nonalcoholics with no family history of alcoholism to those with a family history of alcoholism. High risk individuals rather than those already afflicted with the disease were studied because chronic alcohol abuse reduces the number of dopamine receptors, making comparison difficult. Receptor levels were 10% higher in participants with a family history of alcoholism. The highest receptor levels were found in the frontal lobes of the brain that are associated with emotional reactions to stress and cognitive control of decisions about drinking. Alcoholism is a serious problem in the United States and a growing problem among our teen population. Researchers hope their discovery will lead to new treatment strategies for alcoholics and protective measures for those most at risk.

Recognized alternative medicine expert Dr. Burton Goldberg can help you fight and recover from alcohol addiction. The incidence of autism has increased dramatically in the last 20 years, from 5 to 50 cases per 10,000 children.

Researchers studied the medical records of 300,000 17-year-olds collected by Israeli draft boards in the 1980s. The study was conducted by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Columbia University, and Israeli institutions including Chaim Sheba Medical Center and Hebrew University and was published in the September issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

Previous studies have indicated that children born to older parents have a greater risk of developmental problems. Sperm mutations associated with aging can increase the risk of brain abnormalities in children with older fathers. The EPA would be in an uproar if our drinking water contained the proportionate nitrate level common in bologna and other processed meats. Nitrous amines are one of the most potent carcinogens on earth. They form metabolically from the ingestion of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite, commonly used to preserve processed meats, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, even smoked fish such as lox.

The dangers of nitrates are well-known to farmers. Decades of heavy fertilizer use can allow nitrates to seep into the groundwater that feeds farm wells. In an examination of water samples from 3,351 farm wells, the US Geological Survey found 9% to exceed safe standards for nitrates, forcing them to be abandoned. The risk to farm families is great. Not only are nitrates a potent carcinogen, but high levels can cause fatal oxygen deprivation in infants.

When Ralph Nader crusaded against the use of nitrates in processed meats, the meat industry screamed botulism! Actually, it would cost millions of dollars to develop safe preservatives and retool the industry. Food industry clout in Washington once again won the day at the consumers' expense.

There are many safe alternatives to lunch meat. Whole food markets sell nitrate/nitrite-free processed meats. Sliced fresh-cooked turkey and roast beef, egg salad and PB&J are all healthful alternatives and provide excellent nutrition without the nitrate risk. Large daily doses of vitamin C (1 gram or more) can also counter the ill effects of nitrates.

And here's a thought for adults: Centuries ago saltpeter (sodium or potassium nitrate) was added to the diet of sailors on the high seas to reduce libido. Maybe you don't need that little blue pill; just stop eating bologna for lunch every day!

Alternative medicine authority Burton Goldberg wants you and your family to be and stay as healthy as possible. He recommends a healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet, and regular exercise as the foundation for good health. Many alternative medicine practices can increase your ability to stay healthy in the midst of the daily environmental risks we face. Should you become ill, Dr. Goldberg advocates a multimodal approach to fighting disease that combines the best alternative and conventional treatments available to attack the problem on multiple fronts. Is living longer worth higher medical costs? Increased medical spending has resulted in increased life expectancy, according to a recent study reported by Lee Bowman for the Scripps Howard News Service.

Life expectancy in the U.S. has increased nearly 7 years since 1960 to 76.8 years in 2000. That was the starting point for a study by David Cutler, a professor of applied economics at Harvard University, and Dr. Sandeep Vijan of the University of Michigan Health System. "After adjusting for nonmedical factors in longevity such as reduced smoking rates and declines in the homicide rate, the researchers estimated that 50% of the increase in life expectancy can be attributed to medical care," Bowman reports. Improved treatment for heart attacks and cardiovascular disease and better medical care for newborns accounted for most of the health care gains.

"Plotting those added years against the rates of health spending during the same period, the researchers found that each extra year of life has cost about $19,900," writes Bowman. As defined by insurance companies, a year of life is valued at $50,000 to $200,000.

The trade-off has not been that favorable for those over 65, the study found. Longevity for older Americans has increased only 3.5 years since 1980 at a cost per year of $121,000 (1980-1990) to $145,000 (1990-2000), well beyond the means of most Americans. However, the researchers believe the increased medical costs have resulted in a better quality of life for the elderly.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford to extend their life at such extravagant cost. Much of the increased cost of conventional medicine comes from expensive tests, many unnecessary, exorbitant lab bills, and costly medicines. Skyrocketing medical costs are of daily concern to the elderly, many of whom must subsist on fixed incomes.

Alternative medicine offers many other, less costly choices, according to Dr. Burton Goldberg, a long-standing authority in the field. Dr. Goldberg, often referred to as the Voice of Alternative Medicine, has authored 18 widely-acclaimed books on alternative treatments for today's most serious medical challenges. In his books he has tackled cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, weight loss, AIDS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, headaches, sleep disorders, allergies and longevity. Damned if you don't. That seems to be the sentiment of many men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer. Choose surgery and risk lifelong incontinence and often total loss of sexual function. Choose radiation and risk recurrence of the cancer.

There is a dearth of research comparing treatment options that could help those diagnosed with prostate cancer make an informed choice about treatment, according to an Associated Press article that appeared in the Columbus Dispatch (click the post title to read the article). Treatment options include surgery, two types of radiation, or watching small tumors to see if treatment will even become necessary.

The gap in advice leads to overtreatment of early-stage tumors and treatment selections based on fear or misperceptions, according to Dr. John Fiveash, a radiation oncologist at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Fiveash and colleagues at the University of Michigan hope to change that through the development of specialized multi-disciplinary prostate cancer clinics.

"Not all prostate cancer is the same," stresses Dr. John Wei, a urologist at the University of Michigan. Fully 55% of men with low-risk tumors are overtreated and forced to cope with unnecessary complications such as impotence and incontinence, he said. While aggressive prostate cancer can kill, most tumors are so small and slow-growing when discovered that there is a good chance the patient will die of other causes before significant symptoms develop or the tumor becomes life-threatening.

According to the American Cancer Society, one man in every 6 will get prostate cancer, but only one in 34 will die from it. "Roughly 12 million American men are walking around today with microscopic signs of prostate cancer," says alternative medicine authority Dr. Burton Goldberg in his best-seller An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide to Cancer. "For most of these men, the PSA may cause unnecessary worry and premature treatment because it picks up prostate tumors that are likely to remain inactive for life. In other words, men with this form of the disease die with prostate cancer, not from prostate cancer."

Fewer than 10% of all doctors who recommend surgery even discuss watchful waiting with their patients, Dr. Goldberg says. "This profit-driven situation persists despite excellent data supporting the practice of watchful waiting and despite the fact that incontinence, impotence, and other side effects too frequently follow prostate surgery."

Dr. Goldberg recommends a multimodal approach to combating prostate cancer that combines alternative therapies and conventional treatments to attack the cancer on multiple fronts. Diet and exercise can have a profound effect on prevention and containment of early-stage prostate cancer. Using a vertical pattern and covering a larger area, proponent Dr. Doug Knutson hopes the new technique will become the medical standard, replacing the less reliable circular and horizontal patterns favored today.

Since 2004, Dr. Knutson, OSU assistant professor of family medicine, has taught the technique to 100 central Ohio physicians and 400 OSU medical students, but it remains largely unknown outside the OSU community. Dr. Knutson learned the new breast exam method from Elizabeth Steiner, assistant professor at Oregon Health & Science University.

"When done correctly, the procedure might find masses as small as 3 millimeters -- small enough to improve survival rates with earlier detection," according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch (click the post title to read the article and view an illustration of the new breast exam technique).

In the new exam, small circular motions are repeated with increasing pressure in a series of vertical lines down the breast. "The new exam covers the breast in a pentagonal shape from the collarbone to the lower bra line and from the center of the chest wall to the armpit." It takes approximately 5 minutes to thoroughly examine both breasts, the additional 3 minutes meeting with some resistance from time-pressed doctors. "But nobody disputes that it's better or that it's more sensitive" in detecting breast lumps and anomalies, Dr. Knutson said.

Dr. Knutson, whose sister died of breast cancer in 1998, has produced a 15-minute training film on the new exam technique that is being considered for use by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Ask your doctor about this new breast exam during your next visit.

Dr. Burton Goldberg is always looking for new ways to help people prevent and fight cancer. However, one year after infection, whether or not patients exhibited symptoms when first infected, 25% had moderate to severe depression, 84% suffered from fatigue, and 20% experienced tremors.

So far this year, 388 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in 25 of the 50 states with 13 deaths, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. West Nile virus is transmitted to people by mosquitoes. The virus is difficult to diagnose both because most people don't exhibit symptoms when first infected and because it may be a year or more before any symptoms develop, at which time last summer's mosquito bite is a dim memory. Alternative medicine offers options to help your child without exposing him to powerful psychiatric drugs.

Dr. Burton Goldberg recommends the Optimal Brain Makeover developed by Dr. Charles Gant. Dr. Gant's healing approach improves brain function while addressing the risk factors associated with AD/HD.

Food and additive allergies

Heavy and toxic metal toxicity and environmental toxins

Low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet

Mineral imbalances

Essential fatty acid and phosphiolipid deficiencies

Amino acid deficiencies

Thyroid disorder

B vitamin and phytonutrient deficiencies

There is no single cause of AD/HD, explains Dr. Gant, "rather there are cumulative effects of many physiological risk factors" that result in AD/HD symptoms. There is no need to drug your child; Dr. Gant's methods offer a successful alternative. Despite some concerns about side effects, the patch offers unrivaled convenience, reports James Keough on alternativemedicine.com (click the post title to read the article).

Named Emsam, the newly approved once-a-day patch contains selegiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) also used to treat Parkinson's disease. Like all MAOIs, Emsam requires a slew of dietary restrictions to avoid ingesting tyramine which can react with the drug and cause sudden spikes in blood pressure that can lead to stroke and death. Aged cheese, nuts, draft beer, and wine are among the foods to be avoided.

Depression is a serious illness in the United States, affecting nearly 15 million people every year. A 1993 landmark study found that more than 30% of Americans had sought alternative treatments, making more visits to these practitioners than to their primary care physicians. A 2001 survey found that 70% of Americans had used at least one form of alternative medicine, making this one of the fastest growing sectors in American healthcare.

"The goal of conventional medicine is to locate the physical source of a particular disease and then remove it," explains an article posted on alternativemed.com (click the post title to read this very informative article). Practitioners of alternative medicine take a more holistic approach to healthcare. They believe that "health and disease involve a complex interaction of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors." Alternative practitioners take all of these factors into account and treat the whole body.

Alternative therapies fall into 5 major groups:

Alternative Medical Systems such as homeopathy, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine.

Biological Medicine that uses substances found in nature -- herbs, foods, vitamins-- to promote health.

Energy Medicine which involves the use of energy fields to promote health such as qi gong, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, electromagnetic fields.

Manual Medicine based on manipulative and/or movement of one or more parts of the body such as osteopathy, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic, reflexology.

Mind-Body Medicine which uses a range of techniques to boost the mind's ability to influence bodily functions and symptoms such as biofeedback, deep relaxation, guided imagery, hypnotheraphy, prayer, yoga.

A recognized expert in the field of alternative medicine, Dr. Burton Goldberg has been called the Voice of Alternative Medicine. Numerous studies have verified acupuncture's ability to produce relaxation.
"In 1997, the National Institutes of Health issued a statement supporting acupuncture for medical conditions such as pain, nausea, and vomiting, and encouraged more research into this ancient art," according to an article posted on alternativemedicine.com.
The 2001 Yale University study was the first to show that ear (auricular) acupuncture can alleviate acute short-term anxiety. "Participants who received acupuncture at the relaxation point were significantly less anxious" than control groups, with results apparent only 30 minutes after the needles were inserted. Even worse, if your diet is rich in pork ("the other white meat") and red meat, your risk of pancreatic cancer increases by 50%, the study found. No link to pancreatic cancer risk was found from consumption of poultry, fish, dairy products or eggs. The 7-year study involved 190,545 men and women of African-American, Japanese-American, Caucasian, Latino and Native Hawaiian descent, 482 of whom developed pancreatic cancer.

Study leader Dr. Ute Nothlings believes the cancer link comes from chemical reactions during production and processing rather than from inherent fat or cholesterol. If fat or cholesterol were the carcinogenic culprits, Dr. Nothlings said dairy products, which are also high in fat and cholesterol, would show a similar risk of pancreatic cancer, but they do not.

"Our study is the largest of its kind to demonstrate a link between high consumption of processed meats over long periods of time and pancreatic cancer," Nothlings said in a news release carried by Reuters. "The sample size allowed us to obtain statistically significant risk estimates that support this hypothesis." Dr. Nothlings said the next research step is examination of cooking methods. Study results were reported at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Anaheim, California.

The findings were disputed by the American Meat Institute which cited a different study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that reached the opposite conclusion. (Such dichotomies are a common phenomenon in scientific studies.) The trade group, which of course has a professional bias to protect, claimed in its statement, "the larger body of evidence has shown that processed meats are a healthy part of a balanced diet." Most medical experts agree that the salt and sugar content of processed meats alone refutes that claim.

To learn more about how you can protect yourself from cancer risk and about cutting edge treatments available in both alternative and conventional medicine, you must see Dr. Burton Goldberg's informative video Cancer Conquest. In experimental treatments, patients with treatment-resistant depression found relief in as little as 2 hours after a single shot of ketamine, a drug typically used as an anesthetic in higher doses. For some, the positive effects lasted up to a week. While ketamine is unlikely to be approved for treatment because of severe side effects that include hallucinations and euphoria, researchers said it opens new avenues for the treatment of clinical depression.

Depression affects nearly 15 million people in the U.S. every year. Current antidepressants take 4 to 6 weeks to have a positive effect on patients and 8 weeks or longer for those with a resistance to the drugs. For many patients, the side effects from these drugs -- extreme lethargy, panic attacks, increased anxiety, diarrhea and/or constipation -- can be just as debilitating as depression.

Dr. Burton Goldberg can offer you relief without antidepressant drugs. His information-dense, 2-hour video Curing Depression, Anxiety & Panic Disorder tells you how.
